George W. Shannon, M.D, F.A.A.F.P. | |||

He has received outstanding service commendations from the U.S. Public Health Service, the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, the Tennessee Medical Association and the Columbus Hospice, among others. While directing the Jackson, Tennessee residency program, Dr. Shannon was an Associate Professor of Family Medicine. He was formerly an Associate Dean for both the Emory University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) while Director of Medical Education from 1982 to 1988. He has held clinical appointments in the Department of Family Medicine at MCG and Mercer. He is a former President of the Georgia Affiliate of the American Heart Association. Dr. Shannon served as President of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and is a Past Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Academy. He has been editor of the GAFP Journal and served on the Education Committee. He has chaired the Practice Management Committee and now serves as the President of the Foundation of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians. He has been elected and re-elected
as a Delegate to the American Academy of Family Physicians Congress of
Delegates. He served as a member of the Commission on Continuing Medical
Education for the American Academy of Family Physicians and served as
the inaugural chair for the Commission on Continuing Professional Development,
combining the old COCME and the Committee on Scientific Program. Dr. Shannon has been selected as the first delegate for the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians to the Medical Association of Georgia Congress of Delegates. He chaired the Medical Education and served on Telecommunications Committees of the Medical Association of Georgia. He was an inaugural member on the Board of the Georgia Primary Care Network. He is a former president of the Physicians Group, Inc., a 150 member IPA in Columbus. He has served on the board of the Primary Care Network of Columbus and the Quality Health Partners, Inc., two collaborations between business and physicians. He was a founding partner of Horizon Physician Network (HPN), Inc. and Horizons Diagnostics, L.L.C. He has served on the Board of HPN and Horizons Diagnostics, L.L.C. In 2006, he married Barbara Black Twiner. Barbara is a registered nurse who works as a medical case manager for Wellpoint, Inc. They enjoy traveling, Auburn football (tailgating and games), gardening and marveling in the beauty of their new grandchild. The Shannon family is proud of its two daughters. Heather graduated with high honors from Mount Holyoke College. She finished her studies at the Atlanta School for Therapeutic Massage. After a successful practice in Vail, Colorado, she matriculated at Regency University and earned her R.N. She is currently married and practicing nursing in Grand Junction, Colorado. Kerri graduated summa cum laude and valedictorian from North Georgia College and State University in 1997 and has a Masters in geriatric psychology at Georgia State University. Kerri is married and is a black belt Karate instructor at Atlanta Kicks. She and her husband, Joe, are the proud parents of an amazing two year old daughter.
